Flexor tendons are strong, cord-like tendons that connect the muscles in the forearm to the bones of the fingers and hand. They run along the palm side of the hand and fingers, lying relatively close to the skin. Each finger has two flexor tendons, while the thumb has one. These tendons are responsible for bending the fingers and thumb and are essential for gripping and grasping.

When a flexor tendon injury is suspected, other structures should also be assessed, as the digital nerves and blood vessels run close to the tendons and may also be injured.

Is this an emergency?

No, but open tendon injuries require prompt attention to assess if flexor tendons have been damaged or completely divided (cut). Completely divided flexor tendons generally do not heal effectively on their own and require surgical repair.
