What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition caused by pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel, a narrow passageway in the wrist.

Carpal Tunnel is diagnosed by a physical examination or can also include Electrodiagnostic tests such as EMG and nerve conduction study, X ray or MRI.

Symptoms

  • Tingling or numbness in the hand and fingers
  • Weakness in your hand
  • Pain that may radiate up the arm
  • Symptoms often worsen at night or after extended use

Common Causes

  • Repetitive use of the hand and wrist, including using vibrating tools
  • Arm or wrist injuries for example a sprain or fracture
  • Conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or thyroid disorders
  • Genetics, pregnancy and underlying health conditions.
