Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

• Tingling or numbness in the hand and fingers
• Weakness in the hand
• Pain that may radiate up the arm
• Symptoms that often worsen at night or after extended use

• Repetitive use of the hand and wrist, including vibrating tools
• Arm or wrist injuries such as a sprain or fracture
• Conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or thyroid disorders
• Genetic factors, pregnancy and other underlying health conditions

• Clinical examination
• EMG and nerve conduction study

Treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome depends on the severity and duration of symptoms. Conservative treatment may include:

• Wrist splinting
• Activity modification and ergonomic adjustments
• Hand therapy
• Anti-inflammatory medication
• Corticosteroid injections

If symptoms are severe, persistent or do not improve with conservative treatment, carpal tunnel release surgery may be recommended.

Carpal tunnel release surgery involves cutting the ligament to reduce pressure on the underlying median nerve. The body’s natural healing process reconnects the ends of the ligament, and the resulting scar tissue should place less pressure on the nerve.
