Important things to consider in the event of a serious hand injury

  • Remove all rings, jewellery and restrictive clothing, if possible.
  • Do not remove any foreign bodies.
  • Please refrain from eating, drinking, chewing gum, smoking, or vaping until advised if surgery is required.
  • Administer pain relief analgesia if required.
  • For burns, cool the injured arm or hand under running water for at least 20 minutes. The water should be cool, not cold. After cooling, apply burn dressings if available; otherwise, use cling wrap or clean plastic.
  • For any amputated body parts, wrap them in damp gauze, place in a sealed plastic bag, and store the bag in an ice slurry without direct ice contact. Do not apply a tourniquet or dispose of any amputated parts that appear damaged. Contact 1300Handoc for further instructions.
